After yesterday my homemade CDI damaged because exposured to water :D, I finally bought again another CDI Box. Immediately that same night I call my friends if I need a CDI. The problem is that there is only Suzuki Smash CDI Box and Yamaha RX King CDI Box.
I just have little interest to CDI King because the CDI Box is small, I guess King CDI Box not use any IC, even though there is no limiter. But Yamaha Rx King CDI Box Ignition also still use AC (alternating current). Although there may be a replacement IC circuit use the transistor as well, but I prefer no to this CDI Box.
So my choice is the original Smash CDI … I bought with a price of Rp 65.000 plus connectors Rp 10.000 …. Much cheaper than buying one IR2155 IC at Glodok that is about Rp 75.000
My friend said this CDI Box can directly mounted on my bike … but he never put this on Supra yet. Ok, that’s fine just sent immediately here…
At 10 pm my friend brought the box, I immediately installed all, but upss …..not works. Try to check the cable connector but not seen any sparks. An hour passed, still not seen any sparks from the CDI Box…
I’ve been forced to browse my images collection looking for the connector diagram …. but I can not find any…, till time show almost 12 am …. Fine, I left it for later then.
Searching again in the morning … again, finally found Rextor CDI manual in which there is a picture of Smash CDI connector.
1: coil 2: Mass 3: pulser 4: Mass 5: Empty 6: Accu ….
Cable assembled …. Owh, still no sparks… why? I need to go to my workplace immediately.
Almost one hour’s working on cable but the ignition still didn’t work, replacing the coil also just give the same result…
After having several experiment, the sparks finally coming out … good! it turns out to be the cable pulser and mass pulser must be reversed … but when I try with spark plugs connected the ignition still not able to turn on the engine.
It found the spark was not good, fire/spark disappears at higher rpm…
Technical Explanation:
Yamaha Jupiter CDI Ignition same as Suzuki Smash CDI Ignition … has two inputs (pulser and mass pulser) but Suzuki Shogun same as Honda Supra CDI Ignition has only one input pulser. The mass pulser already grounded.
Actually Honda Supra or Suzuki Shogun CDI Ignition have two input at the inside, because it have same principle. So from one pulser input split into two, positive and negative signals then go to the IC (See the series Honda Transalp CDI-nauval2007-moto.blogspot.com)
Ok let just to the point, I use a replacement series with two diodes in order to divide positive and negative signal from pulser, connect a cable from positive input smash cdi to mass (ground) and other negative input smash cdi to pulser, i ‘m not sure why it’s to be reversed but it only works with these condition.
The negative side:
During practice, when I use it on my bike, I have no problem. But in theory I think, there will be little difference between “timing” with the original smash cdi ignition circuit. The detail will follow…
